Some electricity is described as ‘green’ or ‘renewable’, but if it isn’t accredited GreenPower it is likely to be part of our system regardless of whether it is purchased as part of a GreenPower product. For example, old hydro schemes generate renewable electricity, and will continue to do so whether GreenPower sales go up or down. These schemes are already included in Australia’s mix of electricity generation. Another example is renewable electricity that contributes to legal targets. Retailers have to meet these targets for renewable energy, and selling this electricity as part of GreenPower products will make no difference to how much renewable electricity there is. Green Electricity Watch believes that companies that continue to use the ‘100% renewable’ claim for non-100% accredited GreenPower products are misleading consumers. It could divert customers away from 100% accredited GreenPower products, that really do cut emissions, as it can appear that ‘100% renewable’ means the same thing. Companies correctly labelling their products by refraining from calling them ‘100% renewable’ when they are neither 100% accredited GreenPower nor Gold Standard accredited renewable energy
